Connections are shown between recent findings in brain research and principles of Developmentally Appropriate Practices to explore the implications for early childhood learning environments and teaching practices. New research on how the growing mind learns appears to bear out the value of NAEYC's constructivist approach to early childhood education where environments are designed to gain the learner's attention, foster meaningful connections with prior understanding, and maximize both short- and long-term memory through patterns and active problem solving. Each unique learner needs to feel challenged, but not fearful, so that stimulating experiences result in an exchange of ideas and promote deeper understanding. Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children: Recommendations for Teaching Practices

Developmentally appropriate practice emphasizes what is known about children and what can be done about individual children as a basis of decision-making when it comes to instruction and care. The DAP has three core components: knowledge about development and learning; knowledge about individual children; and, knowledge about the social and cultural contexts where children grow and learn. DAP is centered around instructors' "intentionality" of their instruction so that students are able to accomplish goals that are "both challenging and achievable for children". The statement described DAP as an "empirically based principles of child development and learning". In the updated position statement, NAEYC admitted that previous position statements painted social and cultural differences "as deficits and gaps" instead of viewing them as "assets or strengths to be built upon".

By Ellen Booth Church. The idea is that the program should fit the child; the child shouldn't have to fit the program! Preschool teachers look at the "whole child," including intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and creative growth. Of course, every child develops in these different areas at his own rate, and the range of these rates can be quite wide at any given age. A child may, for example, have strong intellectual skills and need more development socially.
