Computational modeling of empathy has recently become an increasingly popular way of studying human relations. It provides a way to increase our understanding of the link between affective and cognitive processes and enhance our interaction with artificial agents. However, the variety of fields contributing to empathy research has resulted in isolated approaches to modeling empathy, and this has led to various definitions of empathy and an absence of common ground regarding underlying empathic processes.

Empathy has become a subject of intense disciplinary and interdisciplinary research in the last decade. There are primarily two reasons for this development, one is the research on other minds in philosophy and psychology, and the other is the empirical discovery of mirror neurons as a basis for social attunement and understanding of another being. The question of other minds is the problem of how we come to believe that others have minds like our own and how to justify this conviction. The discovery of mirror neurons has, on the other hand, led to numerous assumptions concerning the function and impact of these neurons as a neural foundation for the development of cooperation, as well as for the development of morality. In addition, empathy is seen as having a central role in aesthetics, in the understanding of our engagement with works of art and with fictional characters. A fuller understanding of empathy is now offered by the interaction of research in science and the humanities. Empathy: Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives draws together nineteen original chapters by leading researchers across several disciplines, together with an extensive Introduction by the editors.

Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another's position. Types of empathy include cognitive empathy, emotional or affective empathy, and somatic empathy. Edward B.
