I have been studying education, therapies, growth experiences, and other methods for personal change since I was a graduate student with Abe Maslow over twenty years ago. Ten years later I met Fritz Perls and immersed myself in gestalt therapy because it seemed to be more effective than most other methods. Actually all methods work for some people and with some problems. Most methods claim much more than they can deliver, and most theories have little relationship to the methods they describe. When I was first introduced to Neuro Linguistic Programming I was both fascinated and very skeptical. I had been heavily conditioned to believe that change is slow, and usually difficult and painful.

Bandler has continued to improve and evolve the field of NLP and gone on to develop other seminars as well, to name a few. He has been interviewed by a variety of magazines from Psychology Today to Newsweek. Most major newspapers, TV Networks and Radio Stations around the world have interviewed him over the past 30 years. Bandler, a mathematician, philosopher, modeler, teacher, artist and composer for four decades has left a legacy of books, videos, audios, art, students and a body of knowledge that will change therapy, education and medicine forever. Bandler studied how geniuses used their minds to accomplish what they did and was able to successfully replicate the results they produced. Neuro-Linguistic Programming was based on how information is accessed sequentially. One day he noticed that all of the geniuses he knew got out of bed in the morning because they had to urinate.

Main article: Neuro-linguistic programming Bandler helped Robert Spitzer edit The Gestalt Approach based on a manuscript by gestalt therapist Fritz Perls who had died in He also assisted with checking transcripts for Eye Witness to Therapy John Grinder , a professor at the University, said to Bandler that he could explain almost all of the questions and comments Bandler made using transformational grammar. Together, they created what they called a therapist training group. The focus of this three hour weekly group was the use of language as an agent of change. Later on, they focused on the use of language to understand and use "representational systems".
Neuro-linguistic programming NLP is a pseudoscientific approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States, in the s. NLP's creators claim there is a connection between neurological processes neuro- , language linguistic and behavioral patterns learned through experience programming , and that these can be changed to achieve specific goals in life. There is no scientific evidence supporting the claims made by NLP advocates, and it has been discredited as a pseudoscience. According to Bandler and Grinder, NLP comprises a methodology termed modeling , plus a set of techniques that they derived from its initial applications. Bandler and Grinder also drew upon the theories of Gregory Bateson , Alfred Korzybski and Noam Chomsky particularly transformational grammar , as well as ideas and techniques from Carlos Castaneda. Bandler and Grinder claim that their methodology can codify the structure inherent to the therapeutic "magic" as performed in therapy by Perls, Satir and Erickson, and indeed inherent to any complex human activity, and then from that codification, the structure and its activity can be learned by others. Bandler and Grinder say that they used their own process of modeling to model Virginia Satir so they could produce what they termed the Meta-Model , a model for gathering information and challenging a client's language and underlying thinking.
