West Africa is home to many of Africa's oldest kingdoms. These kingdoms played an important role in the development of trade and economic growth of the region. As old kingdoms came to be replaced by new smaller ones many changes were experienced.

Slavery has historically been widespread in Africa. Systems of servitude and slavery were common in parts of Africa in ancient times, as they were in much of the rest of the ancient world. Slavery in historical Africa was practised in many different forms: Debt slavery , enslavement of war captives, military slavery, slavery for prostitution, and criminal slavery were all practised in various parts of Africa. Multiple forms of slavery and servitude have existed throughout African history, and were shaped by indigenous practices of slavery as well as the Roman institution of slavery [11] and the later Christian views on slavery , the Islamic institutions of slavery via the Muslim slave trade , and eventually the Atlantic slave trade.

From the late seventeenth century onward, the English colonies underwent unprecedented population growth, which inspired new faith in colonists' ability to adapt to and dominate the New World. While other European empires may also have had either a degree of colonial autonomy or rapid population growth, only English-speaking colonists gained confidence from both characteristics. But this settler confidence was challenged, from the mid-eighteenth century onward, by the creation of a British empire with Atlantic dimensions. Because settlers in the English-speaking colonies had for a long time connected a non-British identity, meaning Englishness, to being an ocean away from England itself, the newly British and Atlantic empire was less inviting to them and the temptation to define Americans' political and natural interests as separate from Great Britain was eventually overwhelming. In Parliament and beyond, Britons and British Americans discussed the problems of slavery and openly contemplated how the slave trade and forced labour might not have an indefinite future. Slavery Abolition Act , , in British history, act of Parliament that abolished slavery in most British colonies, freeing more than , enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and South Africa as well as a small number in Canada. It received Royal Assent on August 28, , and took effect on August 1, Merchants began to demand an end to the monopolies on the British market held by the Caribbean colonies and pushed instead for free trade. The persistent struggles of enslaved Africans and a growing fear of slave uprisings among plantation owners were another major factor. British abolitionists had actively opposed the transatlantic trade in African people since the s. Several abolitionist petitions organized in alone collectively garnered the support of 1. Such antislavery views spread to Upper Canada later Canada West , influencing the passage there of the Act to Limit Slavery, the first such legislation in the British colonies.

By Kenneth Morgan. Oxford: Oxford University Press, Is an imperial history of slavery different than a history of slavery in the Atlantic or in the Americas? What does an imperial view of the institution allow us to see, and is it simply a different picture temporally and spatially? Slavery scholars are increasingly adopting a broader comparative perspective for their studies, and Morgan's in Slavery and the British Empire contributes to this spirit of investigation while offering a slightly new perspective.

Although it did not abolish the practice of slavery, it did encourage British action to press other nation states to abolish their own slave trades. Many of the supporters thought the Act would lead to the end of slavery. As British historian Martin Meredith writes, "In the decade between and , British ships made about 1, voyages across the Atlantic, landing nearly , slaves. Between and , they took a further , The slave trade remained one of Britain's most profitable businesses.

Based on extensive archival research, this book looks at the earlier contest of empires in the New World, especially among Spain, France and England, and then examines the opposition to empire, the promotion of empire and the question of slavery. Hart's discussion on slavery has even larger scope ranging from early Arab, African and Portuguese practices in Africa and beyond to the legal abolition of slavery in the British empire, the United States and elsewhere in the Nineteenth-century. In a geographically and chronologically wide-ranging survey, he invokes a rich corpus of texts, both familiar and less well known, which show how, from the very beginning, critical thinking even within the Catholic Church called into question the very justification for empire.
