Students often find philosophy a difficult and abstract subject, which, given the scope and nature of philosophical reflection, is not surprising. However, this course illustrates how every person can be a philosopher in a general sense, thinking carefully and rigorously on fundamental questions of human experience. Grades for the course will be computed on the basis of contributions to the Course Discussion Board at least FOUR posts each week, two for each unit of the course , participation in weekly Virtual Chat or Chat Follow-up , three short Free Reading Reports, and either a short essay or a final exam or, at your option, both the essay and the exam. Students considering taking an Internet course should be aware of the special demands imposed by a course of this kind. Since there is no scheduled time for the class to meet apart from the weekly virtual chat sessions , students must have sufficient self-discipline and organization to keep up with the course throughout the term. This is especially true given the compressed 6-week schedule of summer sessions.

Yet it is undeniable that love plays an enormous and unavoidable role in our several cultures; we find it discussed in song, film, and novels—humorously or seriously; it is a constant theme of maturing life and a vibrant theme for youth. Philosophically, the nature of love has, since the time of the Ancient Greeks, been a mainstay in philosophy, producing theories that range from the materialistic conception of love as purely a physical phenomenon—an animalistic or genetic urge that dictates our behavior—to theories of love as an intensely spiritual affair that in its highest permits us to touch divinity. The philosophical treatment of love transcends a variety of sub-disciplines including epistemology , metaphysics, religion, human nature, politics and ethics. Often statements or arguments concerning love, its nature and role in human life for example connect to one or all the central theories of philosophy, and is often compared with, or examined in the context of, the philosophies of sex and gender as well as body and intentionality.

This book fully explores for the first time an idea common to Plato and Aristotle, which unites their treatments—otherwise very different—of love and friendship. The idea is that although persons are separate, their lives need not be. One person's life may overflow into another's, and as such, helping another person is a way of serving oneself. The book shows how their view of love and friendship, within not only personal relationships, but also the household and even the city-state, promises to resolve the old dichotomy between egoism and altruism. Whether it does or not, what can be said in conclusion about this book is that it does not give the kind of help that one expects from commentaries or interpretations of ancient works. Nor does it facilitate a grasp of Plato's monumental work-as-a-whole; it doesn't identify key passages or pivotal transitions. It passes over the changes of tone in Socrates' discourse; it adduces only the commentator's views of the Republic and no others, without stating why this commentator's interpretation is better than others. And, in not making explicit either its own assumptions or what the author calls the Republic's method of "eidetic analysis," the book does not make clear what the relation between the two is.
