Extensive deposits of peat and organic soils can be found in Great Britain, Ireland and worldwide. Their engineering behaviour depends on their morphology, which must be reflected in the description and classification of soil and in turn must be included in the interpretation of geotechnical parameters. Water content is the most important index test and can be used to estimate engineering properties of virgin peat. Other indices are loss-on-ignition and the degree of decomposition scale. Secondary compression dominates when estimating settlements of peat; generally this occurs during the primary consolidation hydrodynamic phase and after dissipation of excess pore pressure.
Leong, E. Organic soils consist predominantly of vegetative materials in various stages of decomposition or preservation. In Southeast Asia, most organic soils can be found near the ground surface overlying or embedded within soft clay deposits. These organic soils have not been as extensively studied as the soft clay and are classified under the general term of peaty soils. In construction where superficial layers of peaty soils are encountered, they are usually disposed and replaced with more competent soil materials. Areas where peaty soils occur in greater quantities are deemed unsuitable for construction and are generally avoided. The increase in population and economic activities in the Southeast Asian countries will, in time, make largescale disposal of peaty soils unacceptable resulting in a demand for adequate solutions to improve the engineering characteristics of these peaty soils.
Peat and organic soils commonly occur as extremely soft, wet, unconsolidated surficial deposits that are an integral part of wetland systems. These types of soils can give rise to geotechnical problems in the area of sampling, settlement, stability, in situ testing, stabilisation and construction. There is therefore a tendency to either avoid building on these soils, or, when this is not possible, to simply remove or replace soils, which in some instances can lead to possibly uneconomical design and construction alternatives. However, in many countries of the world, these soils cover a substantial land area and pressure on land use is resulting in ever more frequent utilisation of such marginal grounds. For the successful design, construction and performance of structures on such marginal soils, it is crucial to predict geotechnical behaviour in terms of settlement, shear strength and stability, with respect to time. This means expanding our knowledge base and calls for a reliable characterisation of their geotechnical properties and mechanical behaviour and subsequently, the devising of suitable design parameters and construction techniques for dealing with these materials. A sound scientific understanding of the nature and functions of peat and organic soils is critical to their correct and safe use, and this book contributes by offering students, researchers, engineers and academics involved with these types of soils a comprehensive overview.

In geotechnical field, peat soil is defined as soil which is formed by accumulation of purely one hundred percent organic matter and which the distinction between soil and vegetative accumulation is not clear. The main objectives of this review paper are to summarize and compare the geochemical properties of peat soil in different districts of Sarawak.
